Chinese new year movies

One month to go before Chinese new year and here's what's on offer.

'romancing in thin air' johnnies to romantic flick with Louis koo and sammi cheng. No andy lau this time and I just can't seem to get excited about this one. Johhnie to just needs Anthony Wong and some guns and I'm in. No more movies about hi risk investments please.

'the viral factor' directed by Dante lam with Nicholas tse and jay chow. Now I have a lot of love for Dante on the goodwill of 'beast cops' but he hasn't given me much love in return. I'm hoping he will turn his career around much like Wilson yip when he wowed me with 'bullets over summer' and 'Juliet in love'. A couple of mis steps with 'skyline crusiers' but did the amazing'spl but gave us the appalling 'Sargon tiger gate' but his career is going swimmingly. But I distress, this pic looks a bit late 90s and reminds me of those media Asia puddings like 'purple storm'. Leaves me a bit cold but hey, you never know.

'the great magican' directed by Derek yee with tony Leung chui wai and lau Ching wan. Lau dressed like the warlord character from the old shaws movie with Michael hui and tony doing the David copperfield role. Looks all a bit silly. But... Could be like 'Peking opera blues' but I doubt it.

'the flowers of war' - does this count? China's bid for the foreign language Oscar directed by zhang yimou and starring christian bale. It's about the Nanking massacre and looks bloody awful. Dubious pilot about convent girls and prostitutes sacrificing themselves for the girl's virtue or something like that. Not quite sure but I'm not keen, not in the slightlist.

And think those are all the Chinese movies out for CNY, the tvb/shaws entry, turning point 2, came out yesterday.

Flying swords of dragon gate inn

As you would expect from such a convoluted title, the film is a bit of a mess. You get that sudden switch of loyalties near the end which annoyingly makes you review the film rapidly in your head to see if it all made sense to the point. Character's motivatations are more of a given rather than developed within the story.
I recall watching the 90s prequel and I find the characters in that to have no similarity to the current incarnation.
The film is watchable and has its moments of fun, particularly in some of the character swap sequences but I can't help thinking about the conclusion of the90s version and thinking how good that final battle was and how this lacked the ballsiness of that climax. And as a direct comparison to tsui's own efforts by then, 'once upon a time in china' was on tv the other night and the cation there was clear, inventive and just so much better. I bring it up because with tsui and jet back together, one can only dream.
Oh well.
